Importing Video and Audio

Last updated October 14, 2026

Import from Import in the web app sidebar, or with Import… (⇧⌘O) in the macOS app. Choose Video or Audio first; each import takes one file.

Supported files

TypeFormatsMax file size
VideoMP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, AVI, WebM, MPEG/MPG5 GB
AudioMP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, WebM2 GB

LensNote works with files only. It does not import from links. To make notes from something you can only stream, record its window with the macOS app, where you have permission to do so.

Length limits

PlanMax length per recording
Free30 minutes
Free trial90 minutes
Pro4 hours

The same limit applies to audio and video. On Pro, a long-video pass lets a single recording run up to 8 hours.

Checks before the upload starts

LensNote reads the recording's length in your browser and checks it against your plan before any data is sent. Start Processing stays disabled while something would block the job, and the message links to your billing page. It checks:

  • Recordings this period — Free allows 5 per month and the trial allows 10 in total.
  • Storage — the file must fit in your remaining storage.
  • Length — the recording must fit your plan's limit, or a long-video pass is used (you are told before it happens).
  • Processing minutes — your remaining plan minutes plus any add-on minutes must cover the recording.
  • Readable length — if the length cannot be read from the file, re-encode it (MP4 with H.264 is the safest choice). On paid plans you can continue, and the checks run after upload.
  • Audible sound — audio files with no audible sound are rejected.

While it uploads

Keep the page open until the upload finishes. Leaving the page or closing the browser during the upload stops it.

If an upload is interrupted, the session appears in your library as Continue upload. Open it and select the same original file. It must be exactly the same size, and the whole file uploads again without creating a duplicate session. Uploads that never finish are cancelled after 24 hours.

After the upload

Processing starts automatically. A new session is called "Untitled Import" until processing finishes; LensNote then names it after its content. The spoken language is detected automatically, so there is no language setting.
